This tool tracks legislation concerning the use of restrictive housing introduced in the U.S. Congress and state legislatures each year, dating back to 2008. The tracker also highlights litigation concerning the use of restrictive housing over the past several decades. The legislation section includes each bill by name/number and jurisdiction, a summary of the provisions, a list of sponsors, status and activity associated with the bill, and links to the full text on the respective legislature’s website. The legislation section of the tracker is updated weekly. Bills that are signed into law by state governors or the president are highlighted on the tracker and shared in the Safe Alternatives to Segregation newsletter.
NOTE: This tracking tool was created and is managed through the collaborative effort of several national organizations. It is updated regularly but may not be comprehensive. No organization is responsible for or necessarily endorses the information contained in this tool.
